Okhrey is not a bustling town — and that’s exactly what makes it special. Here,
time moves at its own gentle pace. You’ll wake up to the sound of birdsong,
watch wisps of clouds drift lazily over pine-covered hills, and enjoy the sight
of traditional wooden houses dotting the slopes.
The village is home to the Sherpa, Bhutia, and Lepcha communities, whose
traditions and warm hospitality add to the experience. Life in Okhrey revolves
around farming, cattle rearing, and eco-tourism, with many families offering
                                        homestay accommodations for visitors.
Stroll through narrow trails between potato fields, barley crops, and
rhododendron groves. You’ll get to interact with locals, see their traditional
homes, and maybe even join them for a cup of hot butter tea.

Gateway to Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary
The biggest draw for visitors to Okhrey is its proximity to the Barsey
Rhododendron Sanctuary. Just a short drive to the nearby entry point at Hilley
followed by a 4 km trek brings you into the sanctuary, where rhododendrons bloom
in a riot of colors every spring (March–May).
The trek is relatively easy and suitable for all ages, passing through dense
forests alive with birdsong. Once inside the sanctuary, you can enjoy panoramic
views of Mount Kanchenjunga and the surrounding snow-clad peaks.
